Complementary

complementary color wheel

When two hues are directly opposite on the color wheel they are called complementary colors. When used together they can make a dramatic statement. For example: yellow and violet. (see left)

split complementary color wheel Split Complementary
A color scheme that usually uses one hue and it's two adjacent colors. For example: green, red-orange, and violet-red.

Note: the arrow diagram is in a "y" shape with the complementary color in the middle. In this case the complementary color is: red, however, red is not used in the color scheme; only the split complements: red-orange & violet-red. Red-orange & violet-red are the adjacent colors to the hue: green. (see right)

Triadic
The clue is in the name of this color scheme. It uses any 3 colors that have 3 colors in between. For example: Red, Yellow, & Blue.

Note: If you look at the arrow diagram, notice how it looks like a pie cut in equal thirds. Here you'll find that between the red & yellow are 3 colors as well as the yellow & blue and the blue & red having 3 colors in between them.
