Discordant Color Schemes
Double Complement
A color scheme that uses two set of complementary colors. 
For example: Blue & Orange and yellow & violet. Note: a common error is to use too many sets of colors, remember to only use 2 sets. (see right)

Alternate Complement
Be careful, this is where it gets a bit tricky. To be considered an alternate this color scheme uses 4 colors.

One is a triad (remember the pie cut in equal thirds we discussed earlier) and then choose a complement to one of the hues. For example: Yellow, Blue, Red make the triad and violet is the complement but could also be green or orange.

To help remember this think of the arrow diagram again. Now compare. Notice how we have our pie cut in equal thirds with the yellow, blue & red. Next, look at where the violet falls--right in the middle of the blue & red. If you were to use green or orange, the arrow would be pointed in the middle of those other colors as well. (see above)

Almost done. We're going to use some new terms here: tertiary.

Tertiary simply means: third or third place.

This scheme uses four colors evenly spaced on the color wheel. A primary (in this example: red), secondary (which in this case is green) and two tertiary colors are used (yellow-orange & blue-violet). The yellow-orange & blue-violet are called tertiary because they are the third colors from the primary (red) and the secondary (green) (see right)
