Silver Ribbon
Foundation
The
Silver Ribbon symbolically stand for a baby's silver feeding spoon. The pearl in
the center represents a baby's heartbeat. Another reason a silver ribbon was
chosen is for the analogy of how silver needs to be refined in the fire as much
as our awareness about this issue. A
foundation with it's sole cause to stop baby abandonment by disseminating
information via public service announcements, speeches, events, fund raisers,
etc.
Not
Complete
Our mission for helping to save babies lives from ending tragically in a trash
dumpster didn't stop with our documentary film "Baby Doe's Heartbeat".
We felt compelled to start a non-profit group: The Silver Ribbon Foundation. We
started by setting up a corporation and did the whole CEO's, directors,
treasurer-thingy, etc. and began sending press releases to the media. Kim
Capozzo from KVBC-NBC did a news story on us and also about "Baby Doe's
Heartbeat".
We were able to do a few things, but we were having difficulty getting non-profit status. Even Senator John Ensign's office couldn't get it pushed through for us. So once again, we faced difficult hurdles. We had to call off our fund raiser and other events. We did disseminate information about stopping baby abandonment with public service announcements, speeches and small ladies' functions, but didn't raise a dime. We personally paid for everything. Why let this minor issue stop us? One baby's life could be saved.
A
Good Idea for the Future...
Our decision: Our production company, Encopa Productions, would donate filming,
time, cast/crew, whatever it needed to create PSAs (public service
announcements). Our PSA series was nominated for an EMA Media Award, and many
more PSA series followed that aired in Southern Nevada and So. California. We
don't need a non-profit group to do this, or to show that we care. We weren't
doing it for the money any way, so here's a nice way to help out. And ya know
what? we love doing this and will make this one of our missions in life. Maybe
when we're better well known we will try for a true foundation again, but as for
now--it works.
We
now call it The Silver Ribbon Stop Baby Abandonment Campaign™.
A NOTE: Dear Sen. Ensign and Press Secretary Sari Mann, thank you both and your
staff for working so hard on this for us. We're sorry it didn't work out quite
as planned, but something even better developed. As always, we're thrilled to
have spoken with you about this issue and admire your efforts. Your ability to
move mountains for us in the past are remembered. Your constituents.
